Organic farming excludes the use of synthetic pesticides, plant growth regulators, feed additives and plant regulators. Importance is given to crop rotation, use of animal manures and mechanical cultivation, to ensure high productivity, to supply plant nutrients, and to control insect pests and weeds. United Kingdom organic producers work to high standards such as those
defined by the Soil Association.
There are multiple benefits attributed to organic farming. There are obvious environmental benefits, but there are also financial benefits in the medium to long term. Abacus can help manage all aspects of conversion to organic methods, from simple specific advice to full project managment, logistics and marketing to the critical financial planning.
As independent consultants, Abacus associates work together on a co-operative basis under a single identity, so that organic businesses, from farms to processors and retailers, can obtain all the organic advice needed from a single source. They can draw on the enhanced knowledge base that the association structure offers.
Associates undertaking frequent training as part of a continual professional development programme. This ensures that they have access to advice that is current and relevant to your needs giving a personalised service.
Whether you require expert organic conversion advice, farm planning and evaluation, sector body applications and agri-environment schemes, England Rural Development Programme funding opportunities, organic conversion planning, assessment of suitability for conversion, and any other aspect of organic agriculture, you will find the required expertise with Abacus Organic.
Conversion to organic production requires spending time in strategic planning, moving from pest crisis management to pest prevention, developing skills in successful marketing, and an independent certifying authority must verify that organic standards have been met over the previous period of two years. Abacus Organic has extensive experience and success helping clients convert to using organic methods.
European Union regulations state that anyone who uses the word 'organic' must have been certified by a recognised certification body, the leading such body being the Soil Association. This requires a two year period of conversion. Twelve weeks are then required for Certification. This allows time for the certification body to inspect the farm, and clarify any additional actions required to meet the standards. Following inspection, an inspector will provide a written report. A compliance form is issued which clarifies any areas which do not reach the standards.
